About Dr Nic Cher, BVMS
Helping Australian pet owners navigate pet longevity, senior health care, preventive health, veterinary costs, and quality-of-life decisions with confidence.

Our Story
Hi, I'm Dr Nic Cher, BVMS — an Australian veterinarian, clinic owner, blogger, and content creator dedicated to helping pet owners make informed decisions about their pets' health and wellbeing.
Like you, I'm deeply in love with animals.
I understand the joy pets bring into our lives. They are our family members, our companions, our comfort during difficult times, and often our fur children. The bond we share with them is extraordinary — which is why I believe every pet deserves compassionate, practical, and evidence-based veterinary care.
Today, I lead a team of veterinarians and nurses across two veterinary hospitals in Brisbane, Queensland — Fortitude Valley Vet and South Brisbane Vet — where our mission is simple: help pets enjoy the best possible quality of life, while helping owners navigate veterinary care with confidence and clarity.
My Journey Into Veterinary Medicine
My path to becoming a veterinarian wasn't a straight line.
I graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Wildlife Biology before earning my veterinary degree — a BVMS — from Murdoch University in 2011. I've always wanted to work with animals, but for many years I was equally fascinated by wildlife conservation, zoology, and the incredible diversity of Australia's natural environment.
Before becoming a veterinarian, I spent more than fifteen years working with animals across Australia, Singapore, Canada, and beyond. I started as an Education Officer at a public aquarium, then moved into the pet care industry as a pet shop assistant, a professional dog walker, a dog groomer, and even a dog treats baker — running a small baking business alongside my grooming work. These roles, varied as they were, taught me something veterinary school couldn't: how deeply people care for their pets, and how important it is to communicate complex information in a way that is practical, clear, and genuinely useful.
That passion for education eventually led me to content creation.
Educating Pet Owners Beyond The Consultation Room
Over the years, I've created veterinary and pet-related content that has been viewed more than 11 million times across digital platforms.
I started making videos because I wanted to help more pet owners than I could realistically see in a consultation room. Every day, owners face difficult decisions about preventive care, chronic disease management, ageing pets, emergencies — and increasingly, veterinary costs. Many simply want trustworthy information from someone who understands both the medical science and the realities of pet ownership.
One thing I've learned after years in practice: the families who are most prepared — emotionally and financially — are the ones who can say yes to the care their pet needs, when it matters most. That's what drives everything I publish on this site.
Areas Of Particular Interest
Throughout my career, I've developed a deep interest in:
-
Senior pet health and longevity
-
Quality-of-life care for ageing pets
-
Preventive healthcare
-
Chronic skin disease and itchy pets
-
Sensitive stomachs and digestive health
-
Pain management
-
Reducing anaesthetic risk in older or medically complex patients
-
Helping owners understand veterinary costs and make informed treatment decisions
As pets live longer than ever before, I believe one of the most important roles of modern veterinary medicine is helping families maximise both the quality and quantity of time they have with their beloved companions.
My Philosophy
Everything I do starts with compassion.
Compassion for pets. Compassion for owners. Compassion for the veterinary profession.
Veterinary medicine is rarely about finding a single right answer. Every pet is unique, every family has different circumstances, and every medical decision involves balancing risks, benefits, quality of life, and practical realities — including financial ones.
My philosophy is to provide honest, evidence-based information without unnecessary jargon. Pet owners deserve clear explanations, realistic expectations, and support in making decisions that are right for their individual situation.
Above all, I believe veterinary care should always focus on improving the wellbeing of both pets and the people who love them.
